Meet the Maker: Fri & Fro
Thrifted Denim into Treasure

Fri & Fro met its start when Freya stumbled across a beautiful French 1970 wall tapestry depicting a reclining female nude. She knew she had to have it, and got her mum Jen on board with the tapestry fixation.

Freya and Jen, along with their fantastic seamstress Lucia, began trialling with denim and vintage textiles to create timeless pieces that are truly one-of-a-kind.

Fri & Fro’s denim pieces aim to add value to thrifted pieces and be created with the least amount of environmental footprint possible to be enjoyed by their contemporary audiences.

The two avid vintage collectors lament the decreasing quality of clothing in op shops in the past decade. Fast fashion has taken over and finding vintage pieces with personality and structural integrity became increasingly difficult. Freya and Jen sought out beloved tapestries and vintage denim pieces to upcycle them into new ones.

Piecing these vintage pieces together is no easy effort – they require a lot of time, precision, and an eye for detail. They source for jackets, tapestries, and vintage home furnishing. After finding the perfect mix, precision is needed to fit textiles of the right size into the denim pieces, and an eye for detail is needed to match each textile for the right complements of material.

The duo seeks to create each item as unique as possible, which leads them to the most expansive library of denim and embellishments to pool from. Once the right pieces have been matched, their seamstress, Lucia, sews them together.

Much time, patience, and tender love and care are required to fulfill the entire process. The duo spends countless hours hunting at op shops and matching the fabrics, while Lucia puts in the elbow grease to sew them together sometimes by machine, but also by hand to add security and maintain the fabric’s integrity. Every finished piece usually gets completed over a few months.

Freya and Jen run Fri & Fro as a side hustle on top of their other jobs. Time, energy, and stamina make it hard for them to scale the business up. For now, they prefer to keep their business as small as possible so they can create high-quality pieces that are love and personality filled. They hope for the business to slowly gain traction because marketing takes up even more time, energy, and money, so it may take a long time to see any return on investments in their efforts.

It is Fri & Fro’s first run in Perth Makers Market, and they are hoping to meet like-minded artists, creators, customers, and contacts. We are so excited to have Fri & Fro as a stallholder at our market on the 9th of April at Goolugatup Heathcote from 9.30am – 3.30pm!
